Why I Only Use Organic Cotton (And Why It Actually Matters)
Share
When I started Something Profound, I knew the fabric had to be right.
Not just nice. Not just “fine for most people.” Actually right.
Because most of my customers — and myself — have bodies that are already dealing with a lot. The last thing any of us needs is a T-shirt that’s also a problem.
So why organic cotton?
Conventional cotton is grown with a lot of synthetic pesticides and chemicals. Those chemicals don’t fully disappear when the fabric is made. For most people, that’s not a big deal. For people with sensitive skin, autoimmune conditions, Multiple Sclerosis (like me) fibromyalgia, people with sensory processing issues or a nervous systems that treat a scratchy seam like a full-blown emergency — it absolutely can be.
Organic cotton skips all of that. No nasty residues. Just softer, purer fabric that’s kinder to skin that’s already doing its best.
The chemical bit (bear with me)
Conventional clothing manufacturing can involve formaldehyde, heavy metal dyes, chlorine bleaches. Lovely stuff.
For anyone managing a chronic illness, a flare, or sensory sensitivities — that’s not just grim, it’s a genuine issue. Organic cotton is processed differently. Less chemical treatment means less irritation. It’s not a miracle, but it is a meaningful difference.
It’s also better for the planet
I’m not going to lecture anyone. We’re all just trying to get through the day.
But organic cotton farming uses less water and doesn’t pump synthetic chemicals into the soil. So there’s that. Feels right for a brand made by and for people who already fight hard enough every day sometimes with their own bodies!
Why I love what I make
I started Something Profound because I live with relapsing remitting MS, I come from a neurospicy household, and I spent too long in jobs that didn’t work for my body or my brain.
I went back to what I studied — fashion — and I started making T-shirts for people like us. People who don’t want to explain themselves, but still want to be understood. People who cope with humour because sometimes that’s the only option left.
But a T-shirt that makes you smile and then irritates your skin all day? That is not the vibe.
So the fabric matters to me. A lot.
Soft from the first wear. Prints that last. Messages that actually mean something.
That’s what I’m making. That’s what Something Profound is.
